1. Real or Faux
First on the list is deciding between an artificial tree or a real one – both are great options and have pros and cons.
Artificial trees look great year after year - crafted from premium materials their branches are sturdy and hold heavy decorations well. But sometimes you can’t beat the real thing – a real Christmas tree will give you that beautiful pine scent - it’s completely up to your personal preference.
2. Give it a Spruce!
Whether real or faux, make the most of your tree by fluffing the branches to give it a fuller look. The branches of an artificial tree can be bent and shaped to your liking, and if you’ve opted for a real tree, be sure to assess the branches and any gaps before deciding on the one to take home.
3. Dream Theme
Set the tone for your decorating by choosing a theme, this will bring the overall look of your tree together. Think colours, textures, sparkles, ornament size. It often works well to pick two to three colours to use, so your tree doesn’t look cluttered, but above all, choose decorations that bring you joy!
4. Lights On!
A general rule and helpful tip is to always put your lights on your tree first. This will create a base for decorating and is much easier than trying to add them later after the decorations.
Wrap your lights upwards from the bottom of the tree and weave them through the branches as you go further up.
5. Beautiful Baubles
You can’t go wrong with baubles – these classic decorations are a must have for your tree and home at Christmas time. Wherever you’re placing them, we recommend clustering them together for visual effect. Mix and match different colours and sizes and have fun with sparkles to add dimension and catch the light.
Buy baubles in sets of six or twelve to create a balanced look – make sure you hang the larger baubles towards the centre of the tree and the smaller ones towards the end of the branches.
6. A Little Extra Flair!
Another expert decorating tip is to layer with decorative ribbons or strings of decorative beads to create depth, then add floral clips, picks and sprays to give it that extra flair. These come in many forms and can also be used around your home decorating too – a great addition to any Christmas wreath or table centrepiece.
7. Top of the Tree
Completing your tree with a statement tree topper will bring your whole design together. A beautiful star is a clear favourite, or you could make your own topper by grouping some beautiful decorating pieces together.
8. The Final Touch
The finishing touch for your tree’s overall look is deciding how to dress the trunk and base. Whether you decide on a tree skirt, decorative container or pot, Christmas themed mat or even some faux greenery with decorations throughout – this will help balance your tree and is also the perfect backdrop for your presents.
9. Home Décor
Christmas decorating is of course not limited to just your tree!! Decorate your whole home with beautiful table top decor, wreaths, candles, baubles and hanging decorations – you can never go overboard, it’s Christmas!!
Happy Decorating!
